Tea bowl with design of autumn grasses
mid 19th century
賀集珉平 Kashu Mimpei , (Japanese, 1796-1871)
Stoneware with enamels over clear colorless glaze
Awaji island, Japan
The flowering autumnal plants on this tea bowl continue an ancient motif favored on enamel decorated Kyoto and Kyoto-style ceramics, as well as on decorated lacquer and textiles. The decorator was skilled at naturalistic rendering of the chrysanthemums, pampas grass, and other plants.
